Report: Rangers, Ryan Callahan Open Contract Talks

No surprise here, but The Fourth Period is reporting that Rangers GM Glen Sather has had "preliminary discussions" with Ryan Callahan's agent, Steve Bartlett on a new contract, although no contract has been proposed thus far.

"The Rangers have had preliminary discussions with Callahan's agent, Steve Bartlett, but a contract has not been formally proposed by either side.
TFP has learned that Bartlett and the Rangers are expected to resume talks in the near future and work towards getting a new contract ironed out.
Callahan, a native of Rochester, New York, earned $2.4 million this past season, with his cap hit being $2.3 million."

I would imagine that it won't take very long for Callahan's agent and Sather to hammer out an extension for the talented right winger. Callahan is coming off the best season of his career and the way he plays is everything John Tortorella wants his team to be identified with. Callahan's emergence as a team leader inside and outside of the locker room has likely guaranteed he'll be the next captain of the New York Rangers once Chris Drury's time in New York is over.
